This small solar thermal system was designed to provide domestic hot water and space heating for a new strawbale home that is an oval in plan. The glycol-based system utilizes pex-al-pex radiant tubing in a concrete floor to distribute heat throughout the residence. Circulation is via PV powered DC pumps, which help to minimize energy usage in this off-grid location. Heat storage is in the conrete floor and a standard domestic water heater. The owners of this residence are very "hands-on" and therefore chose to cover solar collectors to prevent the acquisition of unwanted heat in the summer.
